Personal Profile
I was born on January 20, 1946, in Hastings, New Zealand, to Robert Ritchie Alexander (high school teacher and professor of English, 1913 who passed away February 10, 1998 and who is most sadly missed by all of his family, and to Evelyn Constance Alexander (b. Pugh, 1920-). In December of 1963 the family emigrated to the U.S.A. I received a B.A. in German from Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota, in 1966; an M.A. in German from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1968 and a Ph.D. in German Literature from the same institution in 1974 after writing a thesis on the execution scene in Baroque drama. After a year in Berlin as a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation, I started work as an Assistant Professor of German at Arizona State University in 1976. Since my promotion to Full Professor in 1986 I have founded a summer program in Regensburg, Germany, and carried out research on Baroque drama and theatre, in particular on the literary interrelationships between France and Germany after 1648. I have taught some 23 courses, including historical surveys from 1500 until 1990, genre courses such as the novella, drama, comedy, picaresque novel and Grimms' Fairy Tales. I married Terri Ann Coahran on February 5, 2000 and have no children.
