Royal Arch via Point Huitzil backpacking trip - Grand Canyon, AZ

October 20-22, 2006

This trip was a three day out and back from the Pasture Wash Ranger Station to Royal Arch via the Point Huitzil Route. The trip was inspired by our February 2006 trip to Royal Arch via the more traditional Royal Arch Route. The Point Huitzil Route follows an amazingly steep ancient Anasazi route into the canyon. The route features significant exposure, bouldering and route finding, an authentic Anasazi log ladder, moki steps, and well preserved rock art. A quick Google search yields plenty of writeups on this route so I won't rehash the details here. See: here, here, and here for more information. The only difference between these trip writeups and our itinerary was that we entered and exited the canyon via the Huitzil Route. Note that navigating between the canyon rim and Pasture Wash can be a bit tricky - upon reaching the canyon rim on the way out, we had success getting back to the ranger station by walking a compass bearing across the plateau.
