Course Description:  This course covers the issues, challenges, and opportunities relating to present-day marriage and family living; as well as factors influencing interrelations within the family. Topics include courtship and dating, marriage, parenting, sibling relationships, divorce, remarriage, and stepfamilies.  The prerequisite for this course is a course in psychology or sociology.  As an upper division course, it assumes that students possess a higher level of reading and writing skills necessary for critical thinking and application of material.

  Objectives:  By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  1. discuss theories and concepts associated with the study of individuals, families, and groups;
  2. discuss theoretical and practical information regarding family development, structure, and maintenance.
  3. describe research evidence regarding mate selection, marital and family interactions, and critically evaluate popular literature and media;
  4. apply information learned in this course to self, including dating, marriage, family relationships.

  Class Policies and General Information:

1.      You are responsible for all notes.  If you miss a day, ask a classmate for notes.  Classmates are not required to give you copies of their notes if they don’t want to.

2.  If you miss a class, please do not ask me for handouts or notes.  Ask a classmate or get the information from the web.

3.      You must be on time for exams; if you are 5 minutes late for an exam (without proof of good cause), 10 percentage points will be deducted from your exam. 

43.      You must take all exams.  If you miss an exam, you must have a reasonable excuse along with evidence to support your excuse (i.e., hospital record, accident report).  

5      The final exam is not cumulative.

6.      All homework assignments must be turned in at the beginning of class; late homework assignments will not be accepted.

7.      No extra credit will be given on request.  Do not come to me at the end of the semester and ask what you can do to get the grade you want.  What you can do to get the grade you want is…attend class, complete all assignments, read the book, and study.  If you are doing all of this and still not doing well, make sure you see me early in the semester.  I will help you.

  Grading:

Family Sculpture 1:  50 points

In Class/Out-of-class Assignments:  50 points

Exams:  50 points x 4 = 200 points  NOTE:  No exam will be dropped.

Total Points:  300 points

A = 270 to 300 points

B = 240 to 269 points

C = 210 to 239 points

D = 180 to 209 points

E = 0 to 179 points
