Description: Lecture survey of design issues within a cultural, global, and historical context.
Format: One hour lecture

- Design aesthetics, philosophies, and theories

Design Principles 1 (Dsc 121)
Description: Design as a visual language and process for design thinking and realization
Format: Five hours studio, one hour lecture
Prerequisite: None
Semester: First Year; First Semester
Content
- Color models
- Emotional, physical, and psychological aspects of color
- Idea generation and idea analysis (basic semiotic language)
- Letterform studies
- Manual color: pigment-based: dry (paper) and wet (gouache)
- Perception / cognition principles
- Two-dimensional and three-dimensional elements and principles of design
- Three-dimensional aspects of objects: space, plane, form, volume, surface

Design Drawing (Dsc 120)
Description: Drawing as a means to explore and communicate ideas. Development of individual drawing aptitude as a visual language and process for design thinking
Format: Five hours studio, one hour lecture
