MUSEUM INTERNSHIPS

Summer 2008

The Museum of the Southern Jewish Experience seeks an incoming college junior or senior for an exciting, educational, and diverse internship experience in Mississippi.

Interns will be involved in all aspects of the Museum’s programs.  Duties may include:

  • managing the museum collection and cataloging new acquisitions
  • developing and implementing educational programs for youth and adults
  • leading group tours
  • assisting with traveling exhibits sponsored by the museum
  • conducting historical and grant research
  • helping in public relations and fund raising
  • planning Jewish cultural programs

This broad-based experience is ideal for students interested in southern and Jewish history, Jewish education, museum studies, arts administration, or marketing and public relations.

Interns will receive free room and board at the Henry S. Jacobs Camp for Living Judaism in Utica, Mississippi, as well as a stipend.  The interns will also have the opportunity to work with campers and staff to assist with educational programming based on Southern Jewish history.  The internship will primarily include work at the Museum’s site in Utica, in addition to its other satellite location in Natchez, Mississippi, and at its offices in Jackson.

History Internship Opportunity 

The Goldring/Woldenberg Institute of Southern Jewish Life, located in Jackson,
Mississippi, is looking for summer interns to work with the director of its History Department.  The Institute is dedicated to documenting, preserving, and interpreting the history of Jews living in the South.  You can be a part of this exciting process of preserving the stories of past generations.

Duties may include:

l Historical research and writing
l Road trips to southern communities to collect historical documents and information
l Assisting our oral historian in interviewing subjects
l Putting archival information on the ISJL website
l Transcribing & indexing oral histories
l Grant research and preparation
l Assist with development of interpretive projects
l Assist with planning and promotion of cultural events

 

Interns will reside in Jackson, Mississippi and receive a stipend.  The internship runs from June 2nd to August 8th.  The Institute will help locate lodging, though interns will be responsible for paying room and board.
