Required On-Line Speaking Exercises - Fall 2007
To complete these exercises you should ideally download the following TWO programs:
1. DAT, a delayed audio feedback program. This program will provide you with immediate aural feedback of what you are saying. The idea is that hearing yourself speak helps you to correct errors yourself. To download this (free) program, click HERE.
2. Free Easy MP3 Recorder (or equivalent). This program will allow you to record your exercise so that you can submit it for credit by email. Any program that will record from a microphone will do, this is one that is available free. To download this program, click HERE.

Important! Record your sound file as an *.mp3 file. To minimize the file size, use a 122 bps recording rate. If you have to save a *.wav file from your recorder software, use the following settings (or as close as you can get): Mono, 8-bit and 22050 sample rate. The DAT program should be set to a delay of 300 ms, and a buffer size of 5 Mb if possible.

You may be able to use the built-in microphone and speakers in your computer, but you will get much better results if you use a microphone headset arrangement.

You will have THREE programs running at the same time, your web browser, the DAT program and the voice recorder. Start the DAT and voice recorder programs. Setup a file to record your voice. When you are ready do the following in order:
1. Click the "Start" button on the DAT program
2. Click the "Start Recording" Button on the Recorder program (or equivalent)
3. Start the appropriate Exercise file, below.

You are welcome to practice the exercise as many times as you wish, you only need to record it once to send to me.

Do not worry if you don't have access to a computer with the appropriate microphone and/or headset. Just get in contact with Dr Gould either by EMAIL or by telephone at (480) 965-7278 (57278 within ASU) and he will arrange for you to use one of his computers.

Exercise #1, Due 11:59 PM, Tuesday September 11th. Click HERE to start the exercise audio file.

Follow the instructions given at the beginning of the exercise. You will first be asked to repeat single words as you hear them. Then you will be asked to repeat a single word from a provided sentance. Listen carefully to your own voice as you repeat the words. You should have enough time to try each word at least twice.
At the end of the exercise stop the voice recorder. Then you should email your voice recording file to Dr. Gould to receive credit for your excercise.
