Class Time: Thurs. 7:40 - 8:30 AM
Location: PS H-443

This class is designed to help you to become qualified to become a TA here at ASU. The most important way in which your English will improve is by practicing every day. You can NOT rely upon this class alone to help you.

You will receive 3 hours of credit for this class, it cannot be repeated. Because you get credit, you will also receive a grade. There are no exams or tests in this class (except the obvious one!), and so grades are based upon completion of assignments. You will have to work hard to earn an A in this class.

The class consists of the following assignments:
1. You must register for and attend the ITA Seminar Course.
2. You must attend the CHM 498 Class every week, and participate in the language practice and exercises.
3. Home work will be distributed every week, you must return each homework in class the following week (no later), appropriately signed by your helper (see instructions on the homework package).
4. You must perform recorded speech exercises. These will be posted on the web site approximately once every two weeks.
5. You may participate in "Practice Teaching Assignments" with an ASU undergraduate volunteer. The frequency of these assignments is yet to be determined, and will be determined by the number of volunteers we get.

Grades will be assigned on the basis of the following:

Grade A : Missed no more than 1 assignment
Grade B : Missed no more than 4 assignments
Grade C : Missed no more than 6 assignments
Grade D : Missed no more than 8 assignments
Grade E : Missed more than 8 assignments

Textbook. We will be using the first edition of the following textbook in the class, you might like to get your own copy: Toward Speaking Excellence, Second Edition: The Michigan Guide to Maximizing Your Performance on the TSE(R) Test and Other Speaking Tests, Second Edition, Dean Steven Papajohn, Michigan Press, 2005

We have found that most of our overseas students qualify to TA via the ITA Seminar program, not the Speak Test. Students who receive a 50 on the Speak Test or form ITA Seminar qualify to grade but not teach. Students are required to increase their Speak test score by 5 points each semester to ensure financial support.
