Using You Tube in FL classrooms

How to use?
1. Selective video clips found on You Tube can be used to either introduce new materials or to review learmed materials or to present cultural aspects of a lesson.
2. Have students create video clips in TARGET LANGUAGE to upload to You Tube and/or to upload to web pages.

Vocabulary:  describing scenes/peple/objects.
Grammar:
-tenses: for eg. what is she doing/going to do/just done?; can you retell the sequences you have seen?
-prepositions:  eg.  What do they hold in their hands?  Where did she put ___?
Listening:
-general comprehension of target language
-specific information (dates, numbers, names, etc.)
You Tube in the classroom

Speaking: 
-Prediction/Anticipation before viewing: guess/speculate the end/conclusion or create interest
-Discussion conducted before/during/after viewing: opinion, recommend different ending/plot, body language, acting, filming, performing, etc.
Writing: 
-
retell in your own words
-write, summary, opinion, report, critic's review
In-class activities:
Embed You Tube video or download them to your computer
Plan for in-class activities
  • predict without the sounds
  • fill-in-the blanks
  • commentate without the sounds
  • speculate with half of the screen

Advantages Disadvantages
-authentic & original




-time consuming to browse and select the "right" or "appropriate" video clips and know how to incorporate them to your lesson plans
-up-to-date  -can become dated easily
-realistic
-abusive/vulgar comments if cannot download clips 
-can be assigned as homework (learners view at home)

-can have logistic problem when incorporate into lesson plan (no computer nor internet connection in classroom)
-interesting & captivating
