Lesson Plan 1 st Narrative Lesson:
Week 13

Parts of Narrative

The King died and then the Queen died is not a story. The King died, and then the Queen died of grief, is a story.

Character: Describe each character in your story, psychologically, physically, spiritually, mentally. What does each character want? What do your characters like? Dislike? Where are they going? What is their state of mind?

Plot: Describe the plot line. The arrangement of scenes that tell your story. Ascending action, tensions that move the plot along. These should be events, conflicts that cross your characters lines of desire or fear in some way—physically, spiritually, mentally, etc.

Try to outline seven scenes if you can't just write in any order the ones you remember
best. You can always move them around later.

Place/Setting: How this affects the story. The effects of space on people and situations.
What time of the year? Summer, Winter, Fall, Spring? What part of the country?

Dialogue: Most of the story needs to be told through dialogue—either the character talking to him or herself, or the character talking to other characters.

Theme:: What is the big picture?

Tone: How do you want the audience to feel at the end of your story?
