How To Scan Using Adobe Photoshop

 

Part I : Setting Up

  1. Place the image in the scanner: face down on the glass, aligned with its edges.

  2. Open Adobe Photoshop.

 

Part II : Scanning

  1. Under the File Menu choose "IMPORT  > Twain Acquire." This will open the scanning software that works via Photoshop.

  2. Select your dpi (the "resolution" of the image you need, as measured in dots per inch). Recommended dpi:

           ::   72 for web or screen use (including PowerPoint slides)

           ::   300 for basic 1 to 1 printing

           ::   300+ for enlarged prints

  3. Click "Preview." Wait for scanner to perform the "preview" scan.

  4. Use the "selection tool" to choose the area in the preview to scan (the "actual" scan?).

  5. After it has previewed the specific settings, adjustment to settings can be made by clicking on the tool icon. Here you can specify the source material (photo, drawing) for greater clarity, as well as the contrast, etc.

    It is usually best to make other changes (e.g., brightness, contrast, color balance, etc.) to a scanned image once it has been imported into Photoshop, because Photoshop can perform such alterations in more sophisticated ways than the scanning software.

  6. Click Scan. The image will open as 'Untitled document' in Photoshop.

  7. Resize the image in Photoshop. Select "Edit" menu, and click on "Image Size."
    Because large graphics on a web page can take a long time for a slow modem to load, a considerate web page designer places a small "thumbnail" sized version of an image, which is serves as a link to a much larger version of the image. Create and save first the large version of each image in Photoshop, and then the thumbnail version, each from the scan you just produced.

 

Part III : Saving the file in Adobe Photoshop

Specify a file format. Recommended file formats:

    ::   For the web: .jpg for photos, .gif for non-photo images.

    ::   For high quality prints (i.e outputting to the printer) - .tiff or .jpg (.tiff's have more info than .jpg's without the excess layer info of a .psd).

    ::   For layered images - .psd only.

Save the file in a desirable location. Make a folder for your lesson, and a folder inside that which you name "images." Eventually you will place these in the www folder in your afs space.
