Carl Spitzweg (1808 - 1885) was a Munich-born German romanticist, most famous for his paintings reflecting, with sympathetic humor, aspects of middle-class German life in the Nineteenth Century. Among his best known paintings are The Poor Poet, The Bookworm, The Love Letter, and Serenade. More Spitzweg at these great sites:  Ronny's Gallery and Rosenkranz's Art and Engineering site.
