Biography

Born: December 6, 1857 in Amsterdam, Holland, The Netherlands.

Education: Literary training took place at the Real Gymnasium, which is comparable to American preparatory colleges. Music training was from tutors in Amsterdam, Berlin and Paris and included lessons in piano and music theory. Was a student at the National Normal University at Lebanon, Ohio, for the purpose of learning to speak and write English. After some teaching experience, he gave up the position and devoted himself to further study. While at the College of Music of Cincinnati he took class work in sight-reading.

Professional: In 1881 was an instructor at Bowling Green Female College, Bowling Green, Kentucky. In 1885 he taught for four years at Oxford College at Oxford, Ohio. He taught in the public schools in Piqua, Ohio, for five years and, in 1893, was called to a position at the College of Music of Cincinnati as a teacher of piano and theory. In 1898 he was made the assistant director of the college and in 1901 he was elected manager; a position he held for 25 years. While there he published two books. He left that position and taught at the University of California, Los Angeles. He has been identified with the National Education Association, president of the Music Section Association, president of the National Music Teacher's , president of the Ohio State Music Teacher's Association.

Married: 1881 to Miss Nettie Looker, of Harrison, Ohio, and granddaughter of Othniel Looker, former Governor of Ohio.

Children: *Carl, a grand opera singer; Hermann, a professional singer; Gertrude, a piano and voice teacher; Bertha, a piano and voice teacher; Brunhilde; Elsa; and Helen. *This name does not appear on the list of survivors written in his obituary.

Death: May 18, 1937 in Los Angeles, California, USA.
