Grace Harrington was born in Princeton Illinois in August 1873. Her father, George B. Harrington was a former superintendent of schools in Bureau County, Illinois. He was chosen present of the Northern Illinois Teachers' association and for a time he was a trustee of the State Normal school at Normal, Ill. He was also the author to the book "Past and Present of Bureau County, Illinois," a history of the prominent men and families who have built up the county. Her mother, Emma, was a lady of broad literary and had been able to assist her husband in his official duties as county superintendent of schools. Growing up in such environment, Grace was very carefully educated in music and painting. She graduated from the Columbia School of Music, and Chicago Musical College. She also had special training at the Northwestern University of Evanston. She had devoted her entire time to public school music after she graduated.
Miss Grace Harrington attended the first meeting of MENC when she taught music in Kewanee High School in 1907.
Her family belonged to the Congregational church of Princeton.
