"The Mediterranean has the color of mackerel, changeable I mean. You don't always know if it is green or violet, you can't even say it's blue, because the next moment the changing reflection has taken on a tint of rose or gray."--Vincent Van Gogh
That the Mediterranean changes color, take this as a gift. It means that whatever seems so absolute right now, the way nobody will take your work and cherish you, will change. There is room for you.
DVICE. But take this as a warning as well. If you are in good shape, don't stop working at what got you there. That Mediterranean, you know, it changes color. As a writer, finally, all you can do is write, and get better at it. A plumber who plumbs and through the years gets better at it becomes a master plumber, and a plumber who gets sought out. But does this plumber become a plumber to the stars? Yes yes yes. Maybe. Someday. But does the plumber become the star? Who knows.
"We work in the dark--we do what we can--we give what we have. Our doubt is our passion and our passion is our task. The rest is the madness of art."--Henry James
Go mad well, and for life.
