Over the last several years I have been involved in study abroad programs on four continents, including directing programs in Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, and Belize for well over 1,000 students of all majors and backgrounds. I do this because I have found that study abroad experiences not only help prepare students for living in an increasingly global world, but they really do push students to grow intellectually, professionally, and personally at breakneck speeds. Currently, I direct a summer program looking at culture, health, and environment, located in New Zealand and Fiji.

Students enjoying a rest stop while touring the South Island of New Zealand in 2004. The ASU program itinerary travels from the north to south of the country, starting in the stunning harbor city of Auckland, winding through the North Island, crossing the strait by ferry, and following the Southern Alps to end in Christchurch.

Hiking across Hinewai near Christchurch in 2005. The programs are very active and adventurous, and we spend much of our time on the road, experiencing the country first-hand, such as climbing over archeological sites, helping with the muster on rural farms, and learning traditional healing techniques from local experts.
