Course Description:

This course examines advanced real estate finance and securitization. Real estate finance covers the different types of mortgages available as well as the mechanics of the mortgage market. Securitization is a modern technique for managing financial risk. The course covers measurement techniques for different types of instruments (mortgage-backed securities, asset-backed securities, commercial mortgage-backed securities and REITs). The course will also show how securitization tools can be used for active management of the risk/return profile of financial institutions internationally.

Course Objective:

To provide participants with an in-depth knowledge of international real estate finance and the most recent securitization products, risk measurement and management techniques. This topic is essential for professionals involved in mortgage banking, mortgage- and asset-backed securitization, risk management, derivatives research, trading, treasury management, financial corporate strategy, as well as supervision of financial institutions.

Grading:

There is one exam worth 500 points. There is also a graded case worth 300 points. Class participation is worth 200 points.

We will have: (1) class notes (overheads), (2) Excel spreadsheet exercises, and (3) additional readings.
