Background

This week you will write your draft Theoretical Background section. This section will need to show that you are familiar with CURRENT anthropological theory on your topic. You must be complete in your citations. (I strongly recommend getting a citation program such as Endnote). Do not miss any current debates about an assumption that could affect your work and how you interpret your data. If your project extends outside anthropology, you will need to show familiarity with the ideas and major scholars in those areas as well. This section should be no more than two double spaced pages.

  1. Give a brief overview of the theory that relates to the question you are asking. This might be couched in historical terms.

  2. What are the major existing debates about this issue?

  3. How will your research resolve these existing issues?

  4. What assumptions are you making in your research? Which can be taken as givens and which might be questioned? How can you deal with the questions?

  5. Who are the major scholars dealing with this issue? Have you cited them and discussed their research, even if you don't agree with them?

  6. Are your citations up to date?
