Bio
Dr. Albie Micklich, Associate Professor of Bassoon, joined Arizona State University in the fall of 2006. Prior to this appointment Dr. Micklich was on the faculty
of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, University of Missouri-Columbia,
Michigan State University and University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Dr. Micklich received his Doctor of Music from Michigan State University,
Master of Music from The
Juilliard School, and Bachelor of Science from
Indiana University of Pennsylvania where he studied with Barrick Stees,
David Carroll and David Borst respectively. He is currently Co-Principal
Bassoon with ProMusica Chamber Orchestra (Columbus, OH), bassoonist with
the Ocotillo Winds and has performed with such orchestras as the Lansing
Symphony Orchestra, the West Virginia Symphony, the St. Louis Symphony,
the Johnstown Symphony, the Juilliard Orchestra, to name a few.
As winner of Juilliard’s concerto competition, Dr. Micklich gave
his Avery Fisher Hall solo debut performing the New York premier of Ellen
Taaffe Zwilich’s Bassoon Concerto with Stanislaw Skrowaczeski conducting.
An active member in the International Double Reed Society (IDRS), Dr. Micklich
and Robert Spring, clarinet, will be performing a world premiere performance of Damian Montano's Double Concerto for Clarinet, Bassoon and Orchestra at the 2008 IDRS conference in Provo, UT. He also presented recitals at the 2007 IDRS conference
in Ithaca, NY, the 2006 IDRS conference at Ball
State University and the 2004 conference in Melbourne, Australia. He
has also presented lecture-recitals at the 2003 IDRS Conference at the University
of North Carolina-Greensboro and the 2001 IDRS Conference at the University
of West Virginia. An active chamber musician, Dr. Micklich taught and performed
at the Ameropa Chamber Music Festival in the Czech Republic and has performed
at the International Clarinet Association conference in Tokyo, Japan and
the College Music Society conferences in San Antonio, TX, Madrid, Spain
and Quebec City, Canada.
As a member of the Moran Quintet (2001-2006), one of the most active
and visible quintets in the Midwest, Dr. Micklich recorded Wind Chamber
Music of Theodor Blumer, Vol. 2 which was released by Crystal Records in
January of 2004 and an upcoming CD Wind Chamber Music of Theodor Blumer,
Vol. 3 to be released in late 2007. As a member of the Missouri Quintet,
he recorded the world premiere recordings of David Maslanka’s Woodwind Quintet
#3 and Music for Dr. Who for bassoon and piano on Albany Records. Dr. Micklich
can also be heard on the CD recording Roger Daltry - A Celebration: The
Music of Pete Townshend and The Who with such artists as The Who, The Chieftains,
David Sandborn and Sinead O’Connor. He has contributed on three PBS specials;
Willa Cather: The Road is All, The Monkey Trials (winner of a 2003 George
Foster Peabody Award) and Distant Melodies, Postcards for Europe (1993),
the CD-ROM The Juilliard Music Adventure and has performed with such artists
as Kathleen Battle, Pierre Boulez, Kurt Masur, Leonard
Slatkin, David Sanborn, Pearl Jam’s Eddie Veder and The Canadian Brass.
Dr. Micklich has given recitals throughout Europe, Bermuda, Brazil,
Australia, Japan and the United States and has presented master classes
at numerous universities across the United States. Recitals and master classes
for 2007 and 2008 school year include the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewather, the University of New Mexico, Easter Arizona University, Illinois State University and University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.
In his free time Dr. Micklich is a competitive runner
and marathoner,
and recently finished the 2007 Chicago Marathon and the 2008
Lost Dutchman Half Marathon in Apache Junction, AZ.
Dr. Micklich is a Fox artist.
