1 - Clipboard (either: (1) aluminum—especially one that has enclosed portion to hold extra papers; or (2) Homemade version from two 10” x 12”, ¼” thick masonite or Plexiglas taped at one edge with duct tape, clips to hold map to board; or (3) Any clipboard, but try to get a cover for it.

3 – Mechanical Pencils. Get two 0.5mm sized pencils and one 0.3 mm pencil. Staedtler is best. Make sure the eraser is good.
1 – Basic square art eraser or retractable eraser
2 – Ink Pens (very fine tip). I like the Sakura Pigma Micron 005.

3 – Protractor/Rulers (get the rulers that have the protractor build right into it and make sure it is metric!).
4 – Sharpie Pens. Get an array of different colors and one large black one for your sample marker.
3 – One quart canteens/Nalgene water bottles or camelback. You must have at least 3 quarts.
1 or 2 – Tupperware sandwich container
1 – Wide brimmed or billed hat. Straw cowboy hats are best.
