Term Project--New Information for final presentation

The culmination of this course will be a term project that you will submit at the end of the semester.  This project will integrate the skills that you have learned in this class to produce a 1) a professional written document, 2) a professional poster presentation, 3) a professional slide presentation, and 4) a web site dedicated to the dissemination of information collected for this project.  This project will develop through the remainder of the class.
The first section of this project will be a written statement of a topic in geology that you wish to research.  This statement should be approximately two pages long.  The statement of the topic should be written in Microsoft Word and should include at least one figure (drafted using Microsoft Word's drawing tools) and ideally one equation.  In addition to the statement, figures, and equations, you should include a billeted outline of the research method you will use.  Finally, use your GeoRef skills to find at least five references relevant to your research topic.
After this document has been written, you are to email the document to three of your classmates for peer evaluation.  They will be required to use the annotation features of Microsoft Word to give you feedback on your ideas.  After you receive the annotated files back from all two peer reviewers, you are to revise the text and figures with their suggestions in mind.  Finally, email both the annotated Microsoft Word documents and the final statement to glg490@asu.edu.  This will constitute the first part of your term project.
The link below will provide access to a sample proposal (unannotated).  Download this file so that you can get a flavor for what we are looking for in these statements:

The above was prepared to help you all when you were writing your outlines.

Modifications as of 11/6/97 are the following:

A) You will make four products:

1) a professional written document, 2) a professional poster presentation,
3) a professional slide presentation, and
4) a web site dedicated to the dissemination of information collected for this project.

You DO have to write a paper for the final project.

B) The Final presentations will occur during the allotted final exam time for this class: Tuesday, Dec 16 7:40-9:30.

C) The format of the final presentation the following:

You will give a 5 minute, 5 slide Powerpoint presentation highlight aspects of your project. At that time, the posters that you all have generated will be on the walls around the classroom. Furthermore, the web pages associated with your project must be ready and publicly accessible at that time,a dn you must turn the paper in at that time.

D) Final project grading.

The final project is worth a total of 40% of your grade. It will be graded in the following way: 10% for the written document, 10% for the Powerpoint presentation, 10% for the poster, and 10% for the WWW presentation. Note that the grade will emphasize effort, skillful use of computers to solve the geologic problem, and clear geological thinking. I will take into account if the project is for another class or your thesis verus if you are only doing it for our class. That will be considered with regard to content.
