David William FosterDavid William Foster (Ph.D., University of Washington, 1964 [BA, 1961; MA, 1963 University of Washington]) Regents' Professor of Spanish, Humanities, and Women's Studies at Arizona State University. He served as Chair of the Department of Languages and Literatures from 1997-2001. His research interests focus on urban culture in Latin America, with emphasis on issues of gender construction and sexual identity, as well as Jewish culture. He has written extensively on Argentine narrative and theater, and he has held Fulbight teaching appointments in Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay. He has also served as an Inter-American Development Bank Professor in Chile. His most recent publications include Violence in Argentine Literature; Cultural Responses to Tyranny (University of Missouri Press, 1995); Cultural Diversity in Latin American Literature (University of New Mexico Press, 1994); Contemporary Argentine Cinema (University of Missouri Press, 1992); and Gay and Lesbian Themes in Latin American Writing. Austin: University of Texas Press, 1991). He is also the editor of Latin American Writers on Gay and Lesbian Themes; A Bio-Critical Sourcebook (Greenwood Press, 1994). Sexual Textualities: Essays on Queer/ing Latin American Writing was published in Fall 1997 by the University of Texas Press. Buenos Aires: Perspectives on the City and Cultural Production was published in Fall 1998 by the University of Florida Press. Published by Garland in 1999 is the edited volume of critical essays, Chicano/Latino Homoerotic Writing, and Spanish Writers on Gay and Lesbian Themes; A Bio-Critical Sourcebook was also published in 1999 by Greenwood Press. Contemporary Brazilian Cinema was published in early 2000 by the University of Texas Press, as was the The Writer’s Reference Guide to Spanish (coauthored with Daniel Altamiranda and Carmen de Urioste). The University of Texas Press published Mexico City and Contemporary Mexican Filmmaking in 2002 and Queer Issues in Conteporary Latin American Cinema in 2004. The Editorial de la Universidad de CostaRica published Producción cultural e identidades homoeróticas; teoría y aplicaciones in 1999. Foster is also the translator of novels by Enrique Medina (Las Tumbas/The Tombs and The Duke), Aristeo Brito (The Devil in Texas), Miguel Méndez-M. (Pilgrims in Aztlán, The Dream of Santa María de las Piedras, and Between Literature and Bricks: An Autobiography in the Form of a Novel), and Ana María Shúa (Patient). In 1989, Foster was named the GraduateCollege's Outstanding Graduate Mentor, and in 1994 he was named the Researcher of the year by the Alumni Association. He received the 2000 Armando Discépolo prize for theater scholarship awarded annually by GETEA (Grupo de Estudios de Teatro Argentino y Latinoamericano) of the Universidad de Buenos Aires. |
