1999 Why Ernst Haeckel? The seminar looked at the work of famous biologist Ernst Haeckel. The seminar included outstanding hands-on laboratory sessions. Ernst Mayr's afternoon visit was a high point. Mayr recalled that in his youth, Haeckel and Haeckel's materialistic monism was absolutely scandalous and was "required reading" for that very reason. Ernst scored points with his schoolmates, he said, by confronting his teacher with Haeckel's irreligious views.
