Thanks to the generosity of the late Mrs. Darby Epstein and the Contemporary Forum we are happy to announce the new Herschel Epstein Study in Italy Scholarship. This scholarship is to provide support for an undergraduate student to participate in the ASU Study Abroad Program, specifically the Florence, Italy, Summer Program. This scholarship is in honor of a lifelong learner and traveler, Herschel Epstein. The scholarship is available on a competing basis to students completing their sophomore year as long as they will have enough credits to be juniors after the spring semester. Juniors and Seniors, as defined by the ASU General Catalog, may also apply. The student selected will receive financial support of approximately $3,300 to apply towards the cost of the Florence Summer Program, and must be returning to ASU for a minimum of one semester following the summer program. The recipient must be a degree-seeking student: either an Italian language major in the Department of Languages and Literatures in the College of Arts and Sciences, or an Art or Art History degree-seeking student in the Herberger College of Fine Arts.
After returning from the Florence Summer Program, the recipient must agree to share his or her experience by making a presentation to the members of the Contemporary Forum of the Phoenix Art Museum or a similar group, as designated by the donor. The scheduling of the presentation shall be during the semester after the Florence Summer Program. A committee of ASU faculty members and the President or a designated member of the Contemporary Forum will evaluate all applications and select a recipient. An application is required for this scholarship. Interested applicants should fill out a scholarship application (available here in PDF format), enclose a recent academic transcript, and write an essay, maximum 500 words, explaining how participating in the program will be beneficial for his/her future academic studies and professional development. The applications will be evaluated by a committee consisting of the Florence Summer Program faculty, and a representative of the Contemporary Forum organization. The committee will award the scholarships on the basis of the applicant's overall GPA and the quality of the essay. The application should be submitted in hardcopy. The deadline for applications is March 1, 2010. Application form (PDF)
