Quizzes (12 @ 5 pts each)

Outcomes met by successful completion of this assignment: KC1, KC3

Beginning with week two, each week there will be a short quiz on the readings to test your understanding of content. Quizzes will be posted in Blackboard by 8:00 am Monday and must be completed by 11pm on Wednesday.

Grading: Each quiz will be worth a total of 5 pts.

Discussion Board Posts/Responses (14 @ 4 pts each)

Outcomes met by successful completion of this assignment: CRW1, CRW2, CRW3, CRW4, KC3

Discussion Board posts are the equivalent of class participation. I expect active participation in discussion with posts that demonstrate you have completed and understood the readings, and that raise issues and questions about the topic.

Each week we will apply concepts from the readings to a case or scenario, either from the text or from other sources. Whereas quizzes will test your content knowledge, discussion board posts will give you the opportunity to apply that content.

Copyright and intellectual property are complex topics that can be incredibly confusing. When we read about copyright in the media or talk to other students and colleagues about their experiences, it can become even more confusing. Our perceptions of intellectual property, especially copyright, is often shaped by anecdotes and stories we hear and read. Sometimes those stories are accurate, sometimes they are rumors or myths, sometimes they are flat out wrong. Wading through and determining what is accurate and what is not can be difficult.

The Discussion Board is not only your forum to respond to questions I may ask related to cases and scenarios, it is a forum for you to ask your own questions or clarify your own confusion about topics.

Grading:

Because of the amount of content covered in this course, late postings will receive a grade of 0 points. Flaming or lack of civility in posts will automatically result in a grade of 0 for the week.

4 points: Active participation demonstrated by: responding to questions in a way that shows readings have been completed and that you are applying concepts from the readings to cases or scenarios. Responding to other students' posts, asking or raising additional questions or issues
3 points: Participation demonstrated by: responding to questions in a way that shows limited or partial completion of readings and that you are applying concepts in a way that is unclear or limited. Few or no responses to others' posts, or responses that are limited to simply agreeing or disagreeing without adding to the discussion.
2 points: Limited participation demonstrated by: responses that respond to questions but are based primarily on opinion and hearsay instead of application of readings. No responses to others' posts.
1 points: Limited participation demonstrated by one or more of the following: short responses that may respond to questions but that primarily repeat what others have already contributed without adding anything new or substantial. No responses to others' posts.
0 points: Inactive participation demonstrated by one or more of the following: no posts, posts and responses posted at or near deadlines that show readings have not been completed and only repeat what others have contributed; posts that engage in flaming or lack of civility

Intellectual Property Policies and Procedures Group Assignment (80 points)

Outcomes met by successful completion of this assignment: R1, CRW1, CRW3, CRW4, KC1, KC2, KC3

In this assignment you will work together in groups to propose intellectual property policies and procedures for the MWTC Program. The purpose of this assignment is to give you "real world" experience to apply what you learn in this class. Obviously, it will also help the MWTC Program as we expand and grow and redesign our website.

However, you will learn this semester the work you do for assignments is your intellectual property. That means that you have the right to decide how and whether your work will be used outside of the classroom. Prior to beginning group work, I will ask you to sign a form which will transfer your IP rights to ASU (to the MWTC Program) so that we will be able to use it and modify it, if necessary. In other words, it will become the property of ASU. If you choose not to sign and to opt out, you will complete the same set of assignments with a fictitious scenario.

Graduate Assignment (55 points; TWC551 students only)
