Graduate Assignments

As a graduate student in this course, you will complete all of the work assigned for TWC453. In addition, you will take a leadership role in Discussion board posts and to lead the course for one week.

Discussion Board Posts (1 @ 4 pts; 14 @ 6 pts each)

As graduate students, you have been assigned an additional text for this course: A Nation Transformed By Information. Unlike Making Connections, this book focuses much more on business and economic issues related to information and the technologies used to produce, store, manage, and transport it.

Beginning week 2, I have assigned readings from A Nation Transformed for the graduate section of the course. Your posts to the discussion board should incorporate concepts and information from this reading as well as your analyis of it in the context of the week's discussion.

Grading for DB posts for TWC553 will be based on the 4-point scale for TWC453 plus an additional 1 or 2 pts based on the incorporation of discussion of the additional reading. The scale builds on the scale used for TWC453 so that, for example, if you met criteria for 3 points based on the 453 scale because discussion of Meadows was limited plus you incorporated substantial discussion of Chandler, your grade for the week would be 5 points.

TWC453 grade +2 points: In addition to meeting the criteria based on the TWC453 scale, you have incorporated comprehensive and substantial discussion and analysis of the required reading from Chandler (or other reading for TWC553).

TWC453 grade+ 1 points

In addition to meeting the criteria based on the TWC453 scale, you have incorporated limited discussion and analysis of the required reading from Chandler (or other reading for TWC553)

Portfolio (20 pts, due December 4)

For this final assignment, you will submit a portfolio of your work consisting of the following: Write a persuasive statement assessing your performance and work in this class in the context of the course outcomes. Your statement should go beyond describing what you have done. It should include a self-assessment and analysis of your work presented to me as an argument stating that you have (or have not) met course outcomes. Use your completed research project, discussion posts, and your experience leading the class as evidence in support of your argument. Your portfolio should consist of your statement and a selection of your work that you use as evidence. That means you need to select the work that you believe best supports your evidence. If you've never done this before, think of it is analogous to citing sources in a research paper: you've got a claim (or multiple claims), you cite evidence to support it or disprove it.

When I evaluate your portfolio, I'll be reading and evaluating your statement. Your other coursework (that you include as evidence) has already been graded; here in your portfolio the only purpose it serves is as evidence. You may use any technology you choose to put together your portfolio. Consider how you want to present your argument and link to your evidence in support of it: as a narrative? as a powerpoint presentation? using other software? Your portfolio will be graded based on the comprehensiveness and clarity of your statement, how well you've developed your argument, how well you support your argument, and formatting/mechanics.
