Textbook: Alred, Brusaw, and Oliu, Handbook of Technical Writing; Hilligoss and Howard, Visual Communication; and Johnson-Eilola, Designing Effective Websites

Course Objective:

To introduce students to writing in a variety of media, to understand the consequences of using different media, and to effectively edit all their work

Assignments:

All students will be expected to

Produce a Usability Study (collaborative project)
Identify a commonly used piece of software or game that some people complain about. Through appropriate means (surveys, interviews, and the like) determine what features of the software or game are not meeting end-users' needs and why. Write a report detailing your findings and make an oral presentation (with appropriate visuals) to the class.

Create a flyer/brochure
Identify an event or a program that needs promotion. Write and design either a flyer or a brochure promoting the event or program.

Develop an electronic document (a website, a video, an audiotape or file)
Based on a scenario to be presented in class where a paper document will not effectively present the needed message, create an appropriate electronic document.

Demonstrate Technical Editing Skills
Draft a short (1-2 page) instruction set

Then edit for production the instructions of someone else. You will need to not only submit clean copy but also present the document in suitable format for publication.
