This course intends to give students an introduction to basic HTML and an understanding of the theory of hypertext. Students will learn how to design and write hypertext pages for the World Wide Web. They will be expected to create effective and easily navigable WWW sites.

In order to successfully complete the course, students must
  1. Create a personal WWW site.

This site can serve as your personal homepage. Its focus should be on you as an individual.

  2. Create a professional WWW site.

This site will be a sample of what you might offer an employer or client. You will be expected to work with a real individual or organization in the development of this site. For reasons we will discuss in class, this site needs to be turned in on a disk, zip disk, or cd. Don't post this to the web.

  3. Create a "Stretch" site.

In this site you will be expected to stretch your understanding of hypertext, the World Wide Web, and HTML to the limit. All of you will be expected to go off in different directions. Some of you may choose to emphasize graphics, some may choose to emphasize multi- media, some may choose to explore the possibilities of Java, while others may choose to go in completely different directions. This site is where you will get an opportunity to be creative and show-off what you've learned.

  4. All students will write a short (5-7 page), traditional, linear-text paper on the "Rhetoric of Hypertext."

There are many ways to go with this assignment. You may choose to write about the development of one of your sites, you may choose to do a rhetorical analysis of another site, or you may choose to focus more on the purely theoretical aspects of hypertext. Specific topics must be approved.

  5. Students enrolled in TWC 598 will also be expected to make a 10-15 minute oral presentation to the class on either hypertext or the World Wide Web.
