| Water: Spring is perennial (20,000 gallons per minute) but stream flows intermittently. | |
| Tips:
The
official trail is a closed forest road located within the Fossil Springs
Wilderness. The road was used to deliver materials to build the dam and
flume that diverts and delivers water to the Irving Power Plant (built
in 1916 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places). An informal
trail parallels the road closer to the stream. The Irving dam is slated for decommissioning and removal in 2004-05. This will lead to restoration of natural flow regimes, reestablishment of native fish species, and rapid development of natural travertine dams. |
