Using the equations presented in class, calculate the “light gathering power” of 1.) the Hubble Space Telescope that has a mirror diameter of 2.4 meters and 2.) the Keck Telescope in Hawaii that has a mirror diameter of 10 meters. 

 

Now calculate the resolving power of these two telescopes.  Take the wavelength of light used as 600 nm.  Recall that 1 mm = 103 nm.

 

 

Based on what you have just calculated, which telescope is better?  Does this make sense to you?
