Me, in the ASU Writing Center

My name is

Cynthia Anne Simmons

and I graduated from NAU with an MA in Rhetoric and a Professional Writing Certificate in 2006.

My main interest has morphed from Rhetoric to
Historical Linguistics, Critical Discourse Analysis, and Discourse Analysis
I like being busy.

By way of personal history, I was born in Chicago a reeaallyyy long time ago,
grew up in Long Beach CA, I was in the military from 1970 thru 1974 (got a BA in
Asian Studies while in there), taught English as a second language in China.
Japan and Korea from 1975 through 1989, and have lived in Hawaii, in Flagstaff and now in Phoenix.
While in Hawaii my interests wandered away from teaching to computer
systems administration which I did for three years, I left Hawaii, my love and my home, to move to Flagstaff to go to the
College of Engineering in Computer Science Engineering in 2000. I did
some private consulting in computer systems administration and returned to
school In September 2004. I was accepted to the PhD Program in Rhetoric, Composition and Linguistics in the fall of 2006.I have been active in several student organizations: Graduate Scholars of English Association, AIDShope, the Rhetorical Society of America
and SafeZone. I have also supported and participated in several Graduate Student Conferences, most recently chairing
the 14th Annual Graduate Linguistics and TESIOL Symposium. I have also worked in the Writing Center as a volunteer, and taught as adjunct faculty at MCC. I look forward to starting my Teaching Assistanceship
this fall at ASU. I love cats, children, computer programming, computers and
web design. books, conversational analysis and electronic music (trance, and
dance music). I am a girley-girl, a total clothes horse and LOVE malls and
shopping.
