Carlos J. L. Balsas, PhD, AICP

 

Carlos Balsas is a certified urban and regional planner trained in Europe and the US. He has a PhD and a Masters degree in Regional Planning from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, as well as an undergraduate degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Aveiro in Portugal.

He worked as a transportation planner in California and Massachusetts. His main research interests are downtown revitalization, non-motorized transportation planning, mega-event development, city and culture, and international planning. He has published two books on commercial urbanism and city center revitalization, and written many papers in refereed journals and conference proceedings.

He has lived, worked or presented his work in 12 different countries in Europe, North and South America and Asia. Currently, Carlos teaches planning theory and ethics, advanced urban studio project and sustainable transportation planning.
