REQUIRED

  • AP Stylebook (available online)
  • A good dictionary and thesaurus (available online)
  • THREE-RING BINDER
Buy a three-ring binder just for this class. A three-hole punch will be handy. You’ll be receiving a lot of material. It’ll be easier to stay organized if you keep everything in a binder with topics separated by dividers.

  • A three-ring binder with dividers to hold your notes and handouts
  • Firewire portable hard drive to store audio and video. Since you’ll be using Final Cut Pro and our classroom won’t be available at all times, you’ll need to take your projects to another lab to edit. The hard drive should be a FireWire 400, not just USB, and the size of the drive should be at least 100 GB. Shop around for sales online. Or try the ASU Computer Store, Costco, Office Depot or Fry’s Electronics.
  • MyFiles: Each student is allocated 4GB of personal space, available in all Cronkite and ASU labs AND anywhere there’s an Internet connection. MyFiles is accessible through MyASU (under My Tools on the right side of the page). The Cronkite School no longer offers the Students volume.
  • A creative spirit and an open mind

RECOMMENDED SOFTWARE

  • Recommended option: Download free applications (Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Flash and more) from apps.asu.edu.
    1. Go to http://apps.asu.edu.
    2. Install client.
    3. Run app. Accept all defaults.
  • Adobe Photoshop CS4. You can buy an earlier version for less on eBay.
  • Adobe Creative Suite 4 (Dreamweaver, Photoshop, InDesign, Go Live, Illustrator and more). We have CS3 at the Cronkite School labs, so you’ll need to save your projects as CS3 if you want to work on them here. You can buy an earlier one for less on eBay.
  • You can download a free trial version of Dreamweaver or Photoshop for 30 days.
  • You can download a free version of Soundslides. To get rid of the annoying DEMO VERSION that appears when you play your show, simply open up your folder in a non-demo version and redo the Publish to Web.
