Grades

The best way to learn online skills is by planning, designing and producing Web pages in an environment of friendly, constructive criticism. As your instructor, I’ll be the class facilitator, coach, cheerleader and, if necessary, nag to encourage you to do your best.

Grades will be based on professional standards, including cooperation, organization, thoroughness, quality and creativity.

A+   98%–100% multimedia star
A 94%–97% award-winning quality
A- 90%–93% outstanding
B+ 87%-89% very creative and technically proficient
83%-86% creative and proficient
B-  80%-82% competent
C+ 76%–79% slightly above average
70%-75% average
60%-69% major problems
E 59% and below come talk to me

Deadlines are sacred in this class, as they are in the real world of journalism. If you can’t make a deadline, you must let me know before the due date. Otherwise, late work will be penalized at the rate of 10 percent (one letter grade) per day. If your work is two days late, the highest grade you could receive is 80 percent. Remember: There’s no penalty for turning an assignment in early.

BLACKBOARD
Your grades will be posted on Blackboard. Log in using your ASURITE ID and password. You may want to bookmark this page. A link to JMC 425 will appear under the "My Courses" column on the right side of your myASU home page.

If you spot an error, be sure to let me know ASAP. It’s too late to tell me after classes are over.

Assignments are due at the beginning of class. If you arrive late, your assignment will NOT be accepted. Put Web assignments in your STUDENT folder. Print out written assignments before class (Repeat: Do NOT print them during class) and put them in the folder on the table in the front of the classroom. Don’t wait to be asked.

Blood, sweat—and grades. Grades are based on the final product, not the amount of time you put into it.

Accuracy is of the utmost importance. You’ll lose 10 points for an error in fact or for misspelling any name, be it a street (including calling an Avenue a Road, etc.), person, place, product, institution or company. You’ll lose 5 points for each typo, grammatical error or spelling mistake. Use your dictionary and stylebook religiously. Proofread stories before submitting them.

Grad students must do an extra project, which will be agreed upon with the instructor at the beginning of the semester. This will be graded as a pass/fail and not factored in as part of the final grade for the semester.
