Creating a cascading style sheet (CSS)

Inserting a table on your home page

1. Insert > Table

2. In the dialogue box, select the following:
Rows 2
Columns 1
Width 800 px
Everything else 0
Click OK

3. In the properties box at the bottom of your screen, type main in the Table id box.

4. Click on the h1 tag on the bottom of the page. This selects the h1 element in your page. It will highlight your menu items

5. Click and drag your menu items to the top cell of your table. You can also use Edit >Cut. Click in the top cell of the table, then Edit > Paste.

6. To insert your Flash introduction, click the object tag on the bottom of the page. Cut and paste the object into the bottom cell.

IF YOU HAVE NOT PUT YOUR FLASH INTO A DREAMWEAVER PAGE YET, the go to Insert > Media > Flash. Find personpage_front.swf in your student website folder. Insert that file.

7. Click once in the bottom cell of the table. Click the td tag at the bottom of the page. This will select all the code in between the <td> and </td> of the bottom cell.

8. In the html code, click once next to the d in the <td> tag. Hit the space bar once. A code hit box will appear. Double-click “align.”

9. This will open another hint box. Double-click “center” to center your Flash intro on the page.

10. Save your work.

Adding a horizontal rule
1. From the Common tab on the Insert bar, click the Insert Horizontal Rule button (or go to Insert>Horizontal Rule).

2. Drag the horizontal rule button to the wherever you want it in your document. (The horizontal rule will be automatically inserted if you use the drop-down menu).

3. Experiment with the width (both pixels and %), height, alignment and shading.

Adding the automatic update
1. Make a table with 1 row and 3 columns that’s 800 pixels wide.

2. Place your cursor in the first box.

3. Insert>Date OR click Date (fourth from left) in the Common tab of the Insert bar).

4. From the Day Format drop-down menu, don’t pick anything. From the Date Format drop-down menu, choose March 7, 1974. Don’t pick anything from the Time Format drop-down. Check the Update Automatically on Save check box to update the date on your page each time you save your document.

5. OK

To change the date format, click the date in your document. Then, in the Property Inspector, click Edit Date Format.

Adding the copyright symbol
1. Put your cursor in the middle box.

2. Click the Characters tab on the Insert bar (or go to Insert>Special Characters>Copyright). For even more characters, click on the icon at the far right of the Insert bar (or go to Insert>Special Characters>Other).

3. Click on the copyright character to the bottom of the page.

4. To the right of the copyright character, type © Copyright 2004 Your Name.

For even more characters, click on the icon at the far right of the Insert bar (or go to Insert>Special Characters>Other).

Adding your e-mail address
1. Put your cursor in the third box.

2. Type Contact and your e-mail address.

3. Highlight your e-mail address.

4. Insert>E-mail Link OR click on the Email Link in the Common tab on the Insert bar

5. Type the full e-mail address in the E-mail text box

6. OK
