What’s out there for you?
In today’s journalism world you need
• to be able to create and produce storytelling in whatever format
is most appropriate.
• to master technical skills as well as journalism skills
• to understand what the technology can do
• to be as comfortable writing a text story as with recording
audio to accompany a web presentation.
Advice for new journalists
Learn the technology. It’s helpful to pick up
specific skills, but most important is understanding what the technology
can do and being able to work with different technologies.
Job, internship, and writing opportunities
Watch the Cronkite School website
for job, internship, and writing opportunities.
Learn to be versatile. More than likely, you’ll
end up working in multiple platforms. Even if you think you’ll
be mostly a text journalist, pick up some broadcast skills for when
that’s the best way to tell a story. Learn how to take decent
photos. Even if photography isn’t your job, you may find yourself
with a photo phone or digital pocket camera when something important
happens and there’s no staff photographer around.
Jobs as multimedia journalists
Naka Nathaniel of NYTimes.com
is an example of a multimedia journalist who travels the world producing
some of the great multimedia features on the New York Times website. With
a few digital tools in his backpack, he photographs, does research and
reporting, and produces while on the road. He created some great multimedia
features while inside Iran, serving as Times columnist Nicholas Kristof’s
sidekick and producing multimedia features that supplemented Kristof’s
text.
