DUE THIS THURSDAY

1. Bring an electronic version of your revised résumé to class on a flash drive or CD.

2. Read Chapter 2 (“Tools and Terminology”) in the handout from Online Journalism.

3. Decide what you want to blog about. Read ONE of the blogs listed below. These were written by students in this class. Be prepared to discuss why the one you chose was successful (or not):
• Politically Inactive http://politicallyinactive.blogspot.com/
• Aftermath of Hurricane Katrina http://miomyo.blogspot.com/
• Native American journalist http://nativeamericanjournalists.blogspot.com/
• NFL draft (Alana) was syndicated http://nfldraftme.blogspot.com/
• The Fourth Estate (Ray)
http://fourthestate-v2.blogspot.com/
• Phoenix Suns (Hannah)

• 2006 Mariners (Eric) http://mariners2006.blogspot.com/
• NBA (Richard) http://nbathoughts.blogspot.com/
• Beer (Matt) http://letstalkbeer.blogspot.com/
• Music commentary (Chelsea)

4. Take the test-yourself quiz at Geek Speak, then review the terms you don’t know. The answers are below the cartoon. You don’t need to turn this in. Also look at the other words in the alphabetical list. Next week’s quiz will include some of these terms. If there are terms that mystify you, be sure to ask about them in class on Thursday.

OPTIONAL: If you want to review what we’ve done so far in HTML, go to HTML.

OPTIONAL: Come to Nancie’s first class this Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in our classroom (Stauffer A-114). No quizzes, no grades!

EXTRA CREDIT: Do the Web treasure hunt WITHOUT LOOKING AT THE ANSWERS: http://powerreporting.com/treasure.html After you finish, check your answers and turn them in next Tuesday.

DUE NEXT TUESDAY

1. Hand-code your résumé in HTML. Be sure to look at the instructions!

2. BEFORE CLASS, put an electronic copy of your HTML-coded résumé in the SLOT in JMC 425 (Schwalbe). Be sure your name is on the file. If you’re including a photo or other graphic, put it in the SLOT as well.

The term “slot” is used at newspapers, where the slot is usually the copy desk chief. In our class it’s the name of a folder in our classroom folder (JMC 425). We use it as a holding pen where you can put an electronic copy of your assignments.

3. Also print out and TURN IN a hard copy of the HTML code AND the web page itself (preferably in color).

4. TURN IN three questions AND answers for the quiz next Thursday, September 7, which will cover what we’ve done so far in class and in your reading. The PowerPoints are in the “Sites we looked at in class” sections. Bring any questions to class.

Help! You can e-mail me (cschwalbe@asu.edu) or the Lovely and Gracious (nancied1@earthlink.net). I’ll be in my office (A-214) Tuesday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Don’t hesitate to stop by if you need help or want a second opinion.

Nancie will be in our classroom (Stauffer A-114) between 11:40 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Nancie is also available by phone (480-998-1398) or e-mail (nancied1@earthlink.net). We’re here to help you succeed, so please don’t hesitate to call or send an e-mail.

OPTIONAL: Come to Nancie’s first class next Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in our classroom (Stauffer A-114). No quizzes, no grades!
