DISCUSSION
• Finalize your blog topic during class

LAB
• Set up blog

Font poem

SITES WE LOOKED AT IN CLASS
• Katie Couric on CBS News

ask.com (Barbaro) but the Latest News isn’t about the horse

• A blog about a reporter/videographer with Lou Gehrig’s disease http://www.dailybulletin.com/leosstory/ci_4244067
Photo Gallery: Leo at doctors, 08/27
Watch Video: Leo tells his story, 08/27
      Special Section: Leo's Story

• A blog about well-designed blogs (A lot of the links no longer work, so just look at the designs on this page)
http://larsholst.info/blog/2004/02/11/well-designed-weblogs-volume-2/

UrbanLegends.com (Go here to check out a suspicious e-mail; former journalist David Emery does a really good job posting items soon after they break online)

Urban Legends (Run by Barbara and David Mikkelson, this site is much bigger; the What’s New page is the best way to keep abreast of developments across a wide range of cultural, political, and business arenas)

THURSDAY

Did ABCnews.com flub its Aug. 29 story on Lockheed Martin / Coast Guard whistleblower?
No direct link to De Kort’s YouTube video—or other relevant external sources
Linked only to ABC’s own superficial broadcast piece
Even worse, you have to watch a commercial first
You’re forced to click through four pages to read full story

DUE THIS THURSDAY

1. Study for the quiz on Thursday. There will be 25 questions—fill-in-the-blank, short answer, true/false, troubleshoot bad HTML coding. There will NOT be anything about Photoshop on the quiz.

2. Bring in a favorite saying or a line or two from a poem you really like. Pick something with words that lend themselves to interesting type treatment. You’ll begin designing your font poem on Thursday. For examples, see the Font poem section. Do NOT search for a saying in class. It’s better use of your time to work on your Photoshop skills in class, where we can help you.

3. E-mail your blog address to cschwalbe@asu.edu and nancied1@earthlink.net. Please put the word "blog" first in the subject line, followed by your last name.

4. Post your first blog entry by midnight Thursday. Be sure to read Blog posts.

OPTIONAL: Come to Nancie’s class every Tuesday and Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in our classroom (Stauffer A-114). No quizzes, no grades!

DUE NEXT TUESDAY

BY MIDNIGHT THURSDAY: Post your first blog entry. Be sure to read Blog posts.

1. Finish your font poem BEFORE class. Review the Font Poem section on our class Web site. On Tuesday, please put an electronic version of your finished font poem in the SLOT in JMC 425 (Schwalbe).

2. Print out five hard copies of your font poem BEFORE class. Write your name on each copy. Put two copies in the folder on the table. During class you’ll exchange three copies with classmates for feedback.

3. Also put in the folder on the table the saying or the poem from which you took the line for your font poem PLUS no more than one page double-spaced explaining:
a. why you chose that particular poem or saying
b. why you chose the fonts (include the name of each font)
c. why you arranged the words the way you did
See the samples on our class Web site.

4. Use Colours on the Web and/or the Color Scheme Generator to find a color scheme for your personal Web site. Try both the Colour Wizard and Spin the Colour Wheel. Write down the hex codes of the colors you want to use for your navbar, background, and type.

Help! You can e-mail me (cschwalbe@asu.edu) or the Lovely and Gracious (nancied1@earthlink.net). I’ll be in my office (A-214) Tuesday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Don’t hesitate to stop by if you need help or want a second opinion.

Nancie is also available by phone (480-998-1398) or e-mail (nancied1@earthlink.net). We’re here to help you succeed, so please don’t hesitate to call or send an e-mail.

OPTIONAL: Come to Nancie’s class every Tuesday and Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in our classroom (Stauffer A-114). No quizzes, no grades!

OPTIONAL: You can raise your grade on your HTML résumé by revising it. Turn it in next Thursday, Sept. 14, along with comments from Carol and Nancie. If you don’t turn in our comments, we won’t raise your grade, which can go up a maximum of one letter.
