Week 7 TUESDAY, OCTOBER 3 | THURSDAY, OCTOBER 5 LAB Has a lot of stuff (video, still pictures, blogs) been contributed by citizen journalists? • What is the ONE thing you liked BEST? 1. Review the Photoshop tutorial to reinforce what we practiced in class: http://journalism.berkeley.edu/multimedia/tutorials/photoshop/ You never know what might be on the next quiz! IMPORTANT! NO CLASS WITH NANCIE THIS THURSDAY! DUE
NEXT TUESDAY 2. Finish your personal site by next Thursday, October 12. Depending on far along you are, you may need to work on it outside class. Click on Lab times for (guess what?) info about the computer labs and how to sign onto the JRN server. Your personal site needs to include at least four pages: a home page (which can be your photo/bio/audio), your résumé, your slide show and a fourth page of your choosing. It could be your font poem, your videos or your writing samples. 3. Look at the other student online magazines listed below. HAND IN two things you like and two things you dislike about each site. Look at the design, navigation, usability, interactivity and content. a. The Ball Bearings
from Ball State University (2nd place) 4. Also HAND IN two things you like AND two things you do NOT
like about the design, navigation, usability, interactivity and/or
content of the Cronkite Zine, which is the online magazine for the
Cronkite School. For the things you do NOT like, suggest how they
could be improved. You’ll
be producing the next edition later this semester! Look at two
editions, such as these: All assignments must be typed, not handwritten. We’ll talk about these in class next Tuesday. Here’s what the judge said when we won first place in a national contest: Why it won: The Devil's Tale design has a fresh, crisp look to it with an endearing flash animation on the homepage showing off the best content from the issue. Unfortunately, there aren't any playback controls for pausing or returning to a feature or even skipping ahead. Despite this slight usability issue, the cover does a good job of promoting stories with large art and custom typography. But where most designers add far too much content to their front page, here the designers didn't quite have enough to satisfy my desire to see more. I was hoping the large artwork from the front page would also show up on story layouts, but inside pages did have a good use of inline graphics and additional information. I was delighted to see pull quotes used consistently, and the liberal use of photos throughout stories. I was pleased to see a lot of audio and video content, it made the magazine feel more thorough and immersive from a storytelling perspective. Overall a nice site with attention to detail. Had this site featured more content on the front page and larger, more attractive artwork on the inside pages this would have been a clear winner - as it stands now it wins but just by a small margin. OPTIONAL: Come to Nancie’s class every Tuesday and Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in our classroom (Stauffer A-114). No quizzes, no grades! |
