I Cannot Tell a Lie

I Cannot Tell a Lie is a closed circuit video installation that sets up a dichotomy between the "evidence" provided by the video image and the anamorphic sculpture that bisects the space. A sculpture by the 19th century American Hiram Powers was digitized using a 3D laser scanner. The dataset was modified in 3D Studio Max to transform the visage of George Washington into an extruded birdlike form. From the point of view of the video camera, the anamorphic form appears as the conventional portrait of George Washington. The mediated image is, indeed, a lie that fails to deliver the true character of the physical sculpture.
