Feeling out the cases

Many times people who have grown up in Russian families outside of Russia have not been trained in Russian grammatical terminology. To figure out whether a noun is in a particular case, the easiest way is to ask whether it sounds good fitting in the blanks below. If the form sounds good in the blank, then the form is in the case noted to the left. For instance, when saying in Russian "This is a table," a heritage speaker knows that стол sounds normal in «Что это? Это стол.» but that столу sounds funny in «Что это? Это столу.» Therefore the speaker can conclude that стол is a nominative case form for "table," but столу is not a nominative case form for "table." You can use the following questions to double check what case a word belongs to:
