Before discussing the numbers 1000 and above, let's consider a common type of phrase that uses a common container with a number of items in it: коробка спичек a box of matches. When you discuss a box of matches, the word ‘matches’ always occurs in the genitive case, no matter what case the word ‘box’ is in:

Nom	Вот коробка спичек.	Here's a box of matches.

The numbers тысяча, миллиард, миллиард and триллион are numerical nouns and work the same way; that is they are followed by the genitive plural of the noun and adjective they quantify. If they are the the subject of the verb, the verb agrees with them.

Nom	В сейфе лежала тысяча австралийских долларов.	There were a thousand Australian dollars in the safe.
Nom	В сейфе лежал миллион австралийских долларов.	There were a million Australian dollars in the safe.

If there is an adjective before the number, it matches the number in case, number, and gender:
