When you want to know what year it is, the question to ask is «Какой сейчас год?» or «Какой у нас год?» The year occurs as an ordinal number in the nominative case.
In English we usually break a year into two two-digit sets when reading them out loud. That is, "It is 1987" is pronounced "It is nineteen eighty-seven." Russians never do that. Instead they say "It is the one thousand nine hundred eighty-seventh year," which comes out "Сейчас тысяча девятьсот восемьдесят седьмой год." The number is an ordinal number. Examples:

When you want to say that something happened in a particular year, you use the preposition в and put the word год in the prepositional case. Actually год has an irregular form when used in this context, which is году. Examples:
| We were there in 1995. | Мы там были в тысяча девятьсот девяносто пятом году. |
| We were there in 1996. | Мы там были в тысяча девятьсот девяносто шестом году. |
| We were there in 1997. | Мы там были в тысяча девятьсот девяносто седьмом году. |
| We were there in 1998. | Мы там были в тысяча девятьсот девяносто восьмом году. |
| We were there in 1999. | Мы там были в тысяча девятьсот девяносто девяностом году. |
| We were there in 2000. | Мы там были в двухтысячном году. |
| We were there in 2001. | Мы там были в две тысячи первом году. |
| We were there in 2002. | Мы там были в две тысячи втором году. |
| We were there in 2003. | Мы там были в две тысячи третом году. |
| We were there in 2004. | Мы там были в две тысячи четвёртом году. |
It is common to leave out тысяча and девятьсот when context makes it clear what you are talking about, e.g. «Она родилась в восемьдесят девятом году» “She was born in '89.”
