Russian has two broad patterns for conjugation verbs. The first conjugation we discuss has the following endings:

When these endings are added to an imperfective stem, they produce a present tense verb. When they are added to a perfective stem, they produce a perfective future tense verb. Those two forms we will collectively call the non-past forms. (Bear in mind that when we say non-past in this context, we do not mean compound imperfective future forms like буду читать; we have in mind only forms like читаю and прочитаю.) This give us forms like:

Most verbs whose infinitives end in -ать, -ять and -еть are first conjugation verbs. To find the non-past stem, you remove the last two letters of the infinitive and then add the leftmost series of endings:

Verbs whose infinitives end in -овать are also first conjugation verbs, but in this case the -ова- suffix is replaced by -у- in the non-past forms:

(Note that танцевать is spelled with е instead of о due to the five-letter spelling rule. It is not one of the -евать stems discussed in the next paragraph.)
Verbs whose infinitives end in -евать are also first conjugation verbs, but in this case the -ева- suffix is replaced by -ю- in the non-past forms:

Infinitives that end in -ыть are first conjugation verbs. Most of them have a stem ending in -ой- in the non-past forms, which the exception of плыть and быть:

The verbs ending in -ти (plus the stem -плыть) are first conguation verbs. Their non-past stems are not predictable from the infinitive and must be memorized:

The imperfective stems -знавать, -ставать and -давать, along with all their related imperfective prefixed forms, drop by -ва- in the present tense:

Infinitives ending in -нуть are first-conjugation verbs. Sometimes they are stem-stressed, and sometimes end-stressed:

Verbs whose infinitives end in -чь have non-past stems that end in the velars г or к, but the non-past stems cannot be predicted from the infinitive. When the к appears before the middle four endings (the ones that begin with е/ё), г becomes ж and к becomes ч:

Some first conjugation verbs (historically they are aj/j verbs) undergo consonant mutations. When that happens, the final a is dropped out, and the consonants mutate in the following pattern:

When a first conjugation verb has a consonant mutation, that mutation occurs in all six non-past forms.

There are first conjugation verbs that show other stem alternations than those listed above. As long as those verbs have the endings indicated in the first chart, they are still first-conjugation verbs. Some of these stem alternations show vowels that vanish and reappear. When they do that, they are sometimes accompanied by vowels appearing after prefixes that normally end in a consonant:

Reflexive verbs add a reflexive suffix after the past tense forms. The suffix is -ся if preceded by a vowel, or -сь if preceded by a non-vowel. The verb is first conjugated without the reflexive suffix, and then the reflexives are added:
