The past passive verbal adjective in Modern Russian is formed almost exclusively from perfective verbs. (Among the exceptions are ви́денный seen слы́шанный heard чи́танный read.) The past passive participle (henceforth PPP) is sometimes formed with the suffixes -нн-, -енн-, -ённ- and -т-, depending on the verb class. Sometimes it is formed from the non-past stem, and sometimes from the past stem.

1st conjugation verbs

If you are dealing with a 1st conjugation verb, begin with the я form and subtract the last letter. If the remaining stem ends in a vowel, then the PPP is made with the suffix -нн- followed by an adjectival ending:

Infinitiveя formstemPPP
прочита́тьпрочита́юпрочита-прочи́танный
сде́латьсде́лаюсдела-сде́ланный

If the stem ends in a consonant, and the consonant is the same in the ты form, then the suffix will be -енн- or -ённ-. (If the verb is end-stressed, the suffix will often have ё.)

Infinitiveя formты formstemPPP
перевести́переведу́переведёшьперевед-переведённый
принести́принесу́принесёшьпринес-принесённый

If the infinitive of a first conjugation verb ends in -овать, then the PPP is made from the masculine past tense form of the verb, minus the -л (if any), and the suffix -нн- is used:

InfinitivepaststemPPP
организова́тьорганизова́лорганизова-организо́ванный
заплани́роватьзаплани́ровалзапланирова-заплани́рованный

If the я and ты forms have a consonant mutation that does not occur in the infinitive, then the stem is formed from the infinitive instead of the я form:

Infinitiveя formты formstemPPP
написа́тьнапишу́напи́шешьнаписа-напи́санный
сказа́тьскажу́ска́жешьсказа-ска́занный

If the infinitive ends in -чь, then the stem of the PPP is taken from the ты form of the verb by removing the last three letters and adding -ённ- or -енн-:

Infinitiveя formты formstemPPP
извле́чьизвлеку́извлечёшьизвлеч-извлечённый
сжечьсожгу́сожжёшьсожж-сожжённый
выжечьвы́жгувы́жжешьвы́жж-вы́жженный

If the я form of the verb has a nasal consonant (м or н) that does not occur in the infinitive, then the stem is formed from the masculine past tense form minus the -л and the suffix -т- is used. Notice that the stress follows the the stress of masculine past tense:

Infinitiveя formMasc paststemPPP
нача́тьначну́на́чална́ча-начатый
приня́тьприму́при́нялпри́ня-при́нятый
нажа́тьнажму́нажа́лнажа́-нажа́тый
взятьвозьму́взялвзя-взя́тый
снятьсниму́снялсня-сня́тый
поня́тьпойму́по́нялпо́ня-по́нятый
заня́тьзайму́за́нялза́ня-за́нятый

If the infinitive of a first conjugation verb ends in -оть, -ереть, -ыть, -нуть or then the PPP is made from the masculine past tense form of the verb, minus the -л (if any), and the suffix -т- is used:

InfinitivepaststemPPP
приколо́тьприколо́лприколо-прико́лотый
вы́теретьвы́тервытер-вы́тертый
запере́тьза́перзапер-за́пертый
откры́тьоткры́лоткры-откры́тый
све́ргнутьсве́ргнулсвергну-све́ргнутый

Most mono-syllabic stems and their prefixed compounds form the PPP from the masculine past tense form of the verb, minus the -л, and the suffix -т- is used. Usually the stress follows the stess of the masculine past tense:

InfinitiveMasculine paststemPPP
битьбилби-би́тый
уби́тьуби́луби-уби́тый
мытьмылмы-мы́тый
вы́мытьвы́мылвы́мы-вы́мытый
прожи́тьпрожи́лпрожи-про́житый (stress exception)

2nd conjugation

Second conjugation verbs form their PPP with the suffixes -ённ- and -енн-. The stem of the verb is made by subtracting the last letter from the я form of the verb; this means that it will have the same consonant mutation as the я form (if any). The stress of the participle usually follows the stress on the ты form.

Infinitiveя formты formstemPPP
реши́тьрешу́реши́шьреш-решённый
получи́тьполучу́полу́чишьполу́ч-полу́ченный
купи́тькуплю́ку́пишьку́пл-ку́пленный
пригласи́тьприглашу́пригласи́шьприглаш-приглашённый

There are a very few nouns that are influenced by Old Church Slavic that have a consonant mutation of д → жд in the PPP instead of the expected ж:

Infinitiveя formты formstemPPP
обсуди́тьобсужу́обсуди́шьобсужд-обсуждённый
предупреди́тьпредупрежу́предупреди́шьпредупрежд-предупреждённый
