Digital Development in the Humanities
Information Literacy and Humanities Computing
As an Assistant Professor of Information Literacy in the Department
of Languages and Literatures at Arizona State University, I promote
the application of information technology in teaching and research in
the area of curriculum development, assist faculty colleagues with developing
both instructional and research-based IT projects, and provide training
in the use of various software applications and digitization techniques
through workshops and lectures.
To assist with these roles, I have developed a website focused on Information Literacy in Languages and Literatures, for use by faculty members in the Department of Languages and Literatures. You can check this site for information about any upcoming workshops, links to ASU-based resources, issues related to a more research-focused use of information literacy, among other things.
Current/Ongoing/Future Projects in Digital Development
German Materials Collection - I am continuing to work on a set of online, deliverable materials for use in the instruction of first- and second-year German. This will include a set of grammar point handouts, online practice exercises for self-study, and links to extant materials produced by other projects around the globe.
LangMOO - I am in the beginning phases of setting up an object-oriented synchronous communication environment with many educational components, for initial experimentation by faculty in Languages and Literatures in their courses.
Wiki - In addition to the Linux-based MOO project described above, I am also in the beginning stages of collaboration with Phil Bernick, ASU English, involving the integration of wiki-based writing collaboration tools into the classroom and into professional research and service areas.
Digital Teaching Unit Collection (University of Oregon)
As a Research Associate for the Feminist Humanities Project,
an initiative of the University of Oregons Center for the Study
of Women in Society, I have been active in producing, designing
and implementing a series of humanities-based digital projects that
delivers current research on gender and womens lives with an eye
on providing up-to-date information for inclusion in daily curricula.
This collection, referred to as Digital Teaching Units, represents
particularly intriguing and thought-provoking facets from a larger set
of issues and questions representative of womens experience. Some
particularly poignant examples from this collection can be viewed at
