Using Dreamweaver to Create Pop-Up Windows for Multimedia Glossing of Texts

Step One: Creating a Site Definition

You can use the Site Definition Wizard to set up a Dreamweaver site. The Site Definition Wizard steps you through the site setup process. This method is recommended for users who are new to Dreamweaver.

The wizard has three sections. Each section might have multiple screens, referred to as parts, depending on the settings you select. The three main sections include the following:

  • Editing Files is where you set up your local folder.
  • Testing Files is where you set up a folder for Dreamweaver to process dynamic pages. In most cases you will not use this part of the Site Definition Wizard
  • Sharing Files is where you set up your remote folder.

At the top of the dialog box, the bold section name indicates where you are in the setup process. You might not need to set up folders in all three sections. Each section asks you questions to help you determine your needs.

To use the Site Definition Wizard to set up a Dreamweaver site:

  1. Select Site > New Site. The Site Definition dialog box appears.
  2. Click the Basic tab to use the Site Definition Wizard.
  3. Answer questions on each screen, and then click Next to advance. Click Back to return to a previous screen, if necessary.
For this first screen, you need to name your site. Remember: computer's like it when you use names comprised of single words with no special characters or white spaces.

On this screen, keep the default selection: "No I do not want to use a server technology"

On this screen, choose the first option of editing local copies on my machine. This is the recommended option.

Second, create a folder on your computer where you will store and work on the files that will make up the website you are developing. Browse for that folder by clicking on the little "folder" image.

By selecting a folder, you have now designated your local workspace.

This screen requires several inputs on your part for setting up a connection to the remote server:

  • Choose FTP from the first pull-down menu.
  • Hostname: type in general.asu.edu
  • Folder on the server to store files:

/afs/asu.edu/users/1/2/3/123id/www

This is not as tricky as it looks. For example, my ASURITE username is dgilfill, so for this line (called a pathway) I will enter the following:

/afs/asu.edu/users/d/g/i/dgilfill/www

  • FTP Login: your ASURITE Username
  • FTP Password: your ASURITE Password

Click on Test Connection - if you've entered everything in correctly, then you will receive a message confirming that the connection was successful.

Setting up this information assumes that:

  • you have webspace set up on your ASURITE account
  • you will be placing your web files in this space for live viewing of your site.

On this screen, choose the second option: do not enable check in and check out.

If several people were developing and designing the site, then you might want to enable check in and check out, so that no more than one person was working on a file at a time.

This final screen provides you with a summary of the information you provided. If everything looks alright, then click Done, and Dreamweaver will create the appropriate folders on your local machine, and will set up the connections to the remote server, where you will save your files to make them "live" on the web.
