Dr. Mary-Lou Galician (rhymes with physician and "prescription") — The Original Dr. FUN — is an award-winning mass media researcher, educator, author, and performer with more than 25 years of experience in print journalism, television, public relations, and advertising. She joined ASUs Cronkite School faculty in 1983 and is founding Head of Media Analysis & Criticism.
She is an internationally respected media literacy advocate whose mission is to empower YOU control (and enjoy!) the mass media — instead of letting the mass media seduce and control YOU.
At ASU, Dr. Galician teaches two empowering media literacy mega-courses that fill quickly every semester (with long waiting lists):
For her new book, Critical Thinking About Sex, Love, and Romance in the Mass Media: Media Literacy Applications (Erlbaum, 2007), 30 scholars around the country wrote original chapters addressing her Dr. FUNs Mass Media Love Quiz© and her 12 Dr. Galician’s Prescriptions© for Getting Real About Romance.
| She is known nationally and affectionately as Dr. FUN— which is also her ASU license plate. |

Dr. Galician earned the nickname "Dr. FUN" because of the trademarked musical motivational program she created and presented nationwide: FUN-dynamics!® — The FUN-damentals of DYNAMIC Living. ("F-U-N is her acronym for "Fired Up Now!") For many years "Dr. FUN" empowered individuals and institutions to beat burn-out, the blues, and the bad news — and get Fired Up Now!
She developed her popular QUIZ — which she has administered on national network television — and her empowering PRESCRIPTIONS from her extensive research of what she calls The Romanticization of Love in the Mass Media. As the central parts of her Dr. Galician's Seven-Step "Dis-illusioning" Directions — a.k.a. Dr. Galician's 7-Step Reality Check-Up© (her unique method of media analysis & criticism coupled with relationship remedy), they form the foundation of her classes, programs, seminars, and books, including the new trade book she is completing for the general public —

Called the nation's REALISTIC ROMANCE® Guru, she "practices what she preaches and teaches": She and her husband, DR. DAVID NATHARIUS — an expert in gender communication and conflict resolution — enjoy a REAL-life happily-ever-after. (The couple have led cultural and performing arts travel study programs to such romantic venues as London & Paris and Rome & Florence. For the Cronkite School, Dr. Natharius teaches MCO 450: Visual Communication. And he frequently partners with Dr. Galician in offering REALISTIC ROMANCE® programs, workshops, seminars, and video presentations on land and even on cruise ships in international waters.)
Her annual Dr. FUN's STUPID CUPID & REALISTIC ROMANCE® AWARDS™ for media portrayals of sex, love, and romance — a media literacy service to focus attention on unhealthy media portrayals and to honor the rare healthy portrayals — are announced each year on Valentine’s Day.
