WILLIAM, with his brother GEORGE FRANKLIN, left SHOW
LOW 20 October 1884, moving his family to a new home in Mesa, Arizona.
He was set apart as secretary of the High Priest's quorum, 6 February 1886.
In January of 1888 WILLIAM was appointed city marshal of Mesa. He held
this position until 12 April 1894, during which time he was also deputy
sheriff for two years and constable for three years.
WILLIAM was a farmer both at Show Low and at Mesa. Because of the development of cancer in a hip injury, he moved to Provo, Utah in 1906 for treatment. He died in Provo 11 May 1908.
WILLIAM RONALD was a boy of sixteen when his father
died in 1908. He returned with his mother and her other younger children
to Arizona. Ronald assisted his mother in the operation of the Fish Creek
Inn, on the Apache Trail, from 1913 to 1918. The boy was taken into the
army in 1918. He served in France in Company H, 354 Infantry, 89th Division.
When the Armistice was signed, RONALD drove a truck into Germany and served
another year in the Army of Occupation. During his army life, RONALD had
several miraculous escapes from injury, fulfilling the promise of the patriarchal
blessing: "If your life is ever in danger, the way will be opened for your
escape." After returning home from World War I, Ronald married. He worked
for two years with the father of his wife, L. V. GUTHRIE at Chandler, Arizona.
He then returned to Fish Creek and with his mother, his sister, PARA, and
brother, LEON, operated again the Inn from 1921 to 1925. He then sold and
moved to Mesa where he became an employee of the Shell Oil Company. RONALD
sold his oil agency in 1947 and devoted himself to farming and church work
in the presidency of the Maricopa Stake.
RONALD held many Church and civic positions. He was appointed to the Board of Regents of the Arizona State Colleges and University. He served several times in the Stake High Council and in the Stake Presidency. Because of property which he owned in Farmington, New Mexico, he moved to that place in February, 1951. He was chosen as second counselor to Stake President CLEMENT P. HILTON, 22 November 1953. RONALD was held in high esteem wherever he lived and served.
