Research interests: Endolithic marine microflora, microboring cyanobacteria & bioerosion by microbes. I currently study the mechanisms of carbonate biocorrosion by Mastigocoleus testarum, strain BC008, a marine euendolithic cyanobacterium isolated from marine carbonates in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico. My research focuses in understanding the physiological and molecular basis of excavation in carbonates by euendolithic cyanobacteria, which is not yet known. Our approach includes bioimaging of euendolithic communities in situ , with fluorophor-enabled calcium mapping, a technique useful in observing Ca2+ uptake and release, by euendolithic strains and field communities that use Ca2+ ATPases as the main driver for carbonate dissolution. Read more about this.

Other interests: Hiking, long range competitive shooting, and desert off-roading.
