NOTE: In reporting the averages from the test we drop the lowest scores. This is because 25% (1 out of 4) of all scores will eventually be dropped. In comparing your average with the class average you need to compare with an average which is representative of the final average. Dropping the lowest scores before reporting the average is one way of ESTIMATING the effect of the final drops. These averages are not used in any way in computing the final overall class average. Overall Pre-Exam Average 68 students have taken 3 or more tests and have more than 140 HW points. For these 68 students, the overall averages are % points test 60.15 36.09 HW 80.63 6.45 QUIZ 72.14 5.05 PRS 82.60 4.13 __________________________________ overall 51.7 out of 80 possible pre-exam points or 64.6% <-- Pre-Exam Average Assuming an average of 65 on the final, or 13 out of 20 points, results in a predicted overall average of 64.7. With this predicted average a possible breakdown of grades would be: 48.2 - 59.1 D 59.2 - 71.1 C 71.2 - 82.2 B The true final grade scale ultimately depends on overall class performance on the Final Exam. Also, the final grade scale will be selected so as to find gaps in the final grade distribution. FINAL EXAM Of the 68 students who had taken three or more tests and had more than 140 HW points, 66 took the final exam. For those 66 students the final exam average is 22.24 out of 40, or 55.60%. exam grades FINAL AVERAGE 66 students took 3 or more tests plus the final exam and had more than 140 HW points. for those 66 here are the averages: % points HW 86.38 6.91 quiz 75.29 5.27 prs 84.20 4.21 test 61.68 37.01 exam 55.60 11.12 overall 64.52 (out of 100) <-- Final Average The final grade scale was selected so as to find gaps in the grade distribution. Here is that final scale: 44.4 - 55.4 D 55.5 - 68.3 C (65.9 and above is C+) 68.4 - 78.6 B (below 70.2 is B-, no B+'s this year) 78.7 and up A (below 82.3 is A-, above 90 is A+) Letter grades were assigned strictly according to this scale. The highest E is 42.1, the lowest D is 44.4; the highest D is 53.9, the lowest C is 55.5; the highest C is 66.3, the lowest B is 68.4; the highest B is 74.2, and the lowest A is 78.7. The smallest gap between levels is 1.4 points between D to C. Be sure to check the computation of your final grade. If you find a significant error, please stop by my office. The best day to stop by is Thursday afternoon (12/16). After that any corrections require a Change-of-Grade form. I will be off campus from 12/18/04 - 12/26/04.
